One of the best ways I've discovered to teach myself the bass is to transcribe the great work of other bass players or to write charts from original chord changes. What follows are pdfs of some of my attempts.
PLEASE NOTE: these arrangements/transcriptions were undertaken as a learning exercise and are FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY. All rights remain with the original composer(s), and any transcription will be removed immediately if any composer contacts me with a concern.
Comments/suggestions/corrections also welcomed.

Jazz Exsultate - simple bass chart for a John Purifoy tune
Shed A Little Light - simple bass chart for a James Taylor classic

Unlike other areas of my life I'm not much of a gadget freak when it comes to my rig:
-
1976 Fender Jazz Bass
- Seymour Duncan 3 way active preamp with funk button
- DL "Fat Beams" 45 series strings .045/.065/.085/.105
- Beaver Creek acoustic travel bass
- Ibanez compression pedal
-
Zoom 502 effects pedal
- Eno digital tuner
- Fender Bassman 150 amp for gigging
-
Crate practice amp, rarely turned on unless the house is otherwise empty
-
Mackie 402 mixer, for play-alongs
- AudioTron MP3 streamer, to play the tunes
- Alesis SR-16 drum machine, to practice playing in the pocket
-
Sennheiser HD-440 II headphones for practice... most of which I do late at night ;-)
- Guitar Pro 6 for grabbing charts off UG
-
Finale Allegretto for scoring, practice scales, etc
